The Space Camper Bike Aims To Be The Ultimate Camper E-Bike

Bike packing required a lot of thought and preparation in the past. The right bike, as well as the proper luggage and accouterments, were obviously necessary before you could hop on your bike and head out on the road. You would also need to make arrangements for lodging, a meal stop, and a lot more things.

If the name SpaceCamper sounds familiar, it’s because the company has been in business since 2005 and has become well-known for its Volkswagen bus camper conversions both in Germany and internationally. Ben Wawra, the founder of SpaceCamper, is an avid cyclist and outdoorsman who saw an opportunity in the rapidly growing e-bike segment. Markus Riese, SpaceCamper’s co-founder, is also the founder of the well-known cargo e-bike brand Riese & Muller. The SpaceCamperBike is based on the Riese & Muller Load 75 cargo bike, which should come as no surprise.

The Load 75 is already an impressive cargo bike on its own, but SpaceCamper’s capabilities take it to the next level. To begin, the cargo bay has been transformed into either a recliner for you to relax in or a full-on bed for you to sleep on at night. During the day, simply fold the entire setup and use the cargo bay to transport groceries, supplies, or even your children to school.

In addition, the handlebars of the bike can be folded down and fitted with a table attachment, transforming your bike into a mobile workstation. If sleeping outside in the elements isn’t your thing, the SpaceCamperBike can be outfitted with a tarp that attaches to the bike’s frame, transforming the entire setup into a small tent.

The SpaceCamperBike’s pricing and availability have yet to be announced as of this writing. However, you can almost be certain that it will be more expensive than a standard Riese & Muller Load 75—which is nearly as expensive as a car in and of itself. The Load 75, you see, starts at $12,389 USD and can go all the way up to $15,189 USD, depending on the trim level you select. Considering the amount of technology SpaceCamper brings to the table, the SpaceCamperBike is likely to cost around $20,000 USD.
